Formats
Portable Document Format
PDF makes a document look exactly the same on every device. It fixes fonts, images and page layout in place and is the shared language of official letters, invoices and applications.
Microsoft Word (Office Open XML)
DOCX is the document format Microsoft Word has used since 2007. It holds headings, tables, images and formatting, and Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages open it too.
Markdown
Markdown is a lightweight markup language that turns a few simple symbols in plain text into headings, lists, links and bold text. GitHub, Notion and many note apps use it.
HyperText Markup Language
HTML is the markup language web pages are written in. It marks up headings, paragraphs, links and tables with tags, and every browser opens it.
Plain text
TXT is a plain text file with no formatting at all. It opens on every device and is the smallest, most durable document format.
