    Formats

    JPG

    Joint Photographic Experts Group

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used format for photos. It compresses lossily, discarding detail the eye barely notices to keep files small. It supports neither transparency nor animation.

    PNG

    Portable Network Graphics

PNG is an image format with lossless compression and full transparency. Because it keeps every pixel exactly, it suits screenshots, logos and images that contain text.

    WEBP

    WebP

WebP is an image format Google designed for the web. It compresses lossily or losslessly, supports transparency and animation, and is typically 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same quality.

    AVIF

    AV1 Image File Format

AVIF is a next-generation image format built on the AV1 video codec. It produces files smaller still than WebP at the same quality and supports transparency and HDR.

    GIF

    Graphics Interchange Format

GIF is a veteran image format limited to 256 colours that supports animation. It is still everywhere for short silent loops and simple graphics.

    BMP

    Windows Bitmap

BMP is the native bitmap format of Windows. It usually stores pixels with no compression at all, so it is lossless but files are very large.

    ICO

    Windows Icon

ICO is the format for Windows icons and website favicons. One file can hold several sizes, from 16×16 up to 256×256.

    TIFF

    Tagged Image File Format

TIFF is the lossless image format of printing, scanning and archiving. One file can hold many pages, and scanners and fax systems often produce it.

    SVG

    Scalable Vector Graphics

SVG is a vector format that describes shapes as mathematical paths instead of pixels. It stays sharp at any size, which makes it ideal for logos, icons and illustrations.

    HEIC

    High Efficiency Image Container

HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads save photos in by default. It takes roughly half the space of JPG at the same quality, but Windows, websites and upload forms often cannot open it.
