JPG
Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used format for photos. It compresses lossily, discarding detail the eye barely notices to keep files small. It supports neither transparency nor animation.
PNG
Portable Network Graphics
PNG is an image format with lossless compression and full transparency. Because it keeps every pixel exactly, it suits screenshots, logos and images that contain text.

Is converting JPG to PNG free?

Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG keeps the current picture exactly but cannot restore detail lost when the JPG was saved. The benefit is that further edits will not degrade it any more.
